Description

Lithgow Street in Winslow flooded on April 30, 1923. The photo is looking south, with the Kennebec River to the right. Homes were literally on the banks of the Kennebec River.

By 2012, only one home remained on the west side of the street. Prone to frequent flooding, the river in 1987 washed away six residences, plus the old Fort School, which was the first school built in Winslow in 1819.

Families were not allowed to rebuild their homes on Lithgow Street after the Flood of 1987.
